Red Wings coach Mike Babcock says Niklas Kronwall will not play against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday and Tomas Holmstrom is questionable because of knee injuries. If Holmstrom doesn't get healthy soon, Team Sweden might replace him on the roster with a Detroit teammate when Olympic rosters are set Monday.

Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom is back in the starting lineup. Coach Todd Richards said before Wednesday's game against Phoenix that Backstrom will be taken off injured reserve and face the Coyotes. Backstrom missed six games with a back problem and an unspecified illness. The 2009 All-Star is 22-16-4 with a .901 save percentage and a 2.74 goals against average.

The Ottawa Senators were ready to get some new streaks started. Jason Spezza scored his 10th goal in his last 10 games late in the second period to send Ottawa to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Brian Elliott made 27 saves in his 10th straight start for the Senators, who won their 12th in 13 games.

6 teams to open 2010-11 season in Europe (AP)

Six NHL teams will open the 2010-11 season in Europe, the fourth straight year the league will begin play overseas. The NHL announced on Tuesday that the Boston Bruins, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, Phoenix Coyotes and San Jose Sharks will combine to play a total of six games in Europe at the start of next season.
