As the hats and caps rained down, R.J. Umberger smiled, pumped his fist and savored the moment. Florida Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being accidentally hit in the head by the stick of teammate Keith Ballard in the opening period of Monday night's game against the Atlanta Thrashers. Vokoun had a cut on his ear but was alert when he was placed in an ambulance and taken to a local hospital, a Panthers spokesman said.

Todd Bertuzzi had a goal and an assist and Jimmy Howard made 29 saves to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Monday night. Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and an assist while Eric Fehr added a goal and an assist Monday night, leading Washington to a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Maxim Afinogenov scored with six seconds remaining in the third period to give the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers for their fourth consecutive victory. It was the fifth straight loss for the Panthers. Afinogenov knocked in a 15-footer for his 11th goal off a pass from Nik Antropov, beating Florida goaltender Scott Clemmensen.

Ryan Miller stopped all 38 shots he faced Monday night to earn his third shutout of the season and lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
