Jay Bouwmeester didn't wait for the start of free agency and signed a multiyear contract with the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. Flames general manager Darryl Sutter traded Jordan Leopold and a draft pick to the Florida Panthers at the NHL draft last weekend to acquire Bouwmeester's rights and get a head start on the competition for the 25-year-old star.

The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed Bill Guerin for one year on Monday. The Carolina Hurricanes are keeping Jussi Jokinen, agreeing to a two-year deal with one of the stars of their recent playoff run. The team said Monday that Jokinen's new contract will pay him $1.5 million next season and $1.9 million in 2010-11. Jokinen could have become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday.
